If you don't fancy walking or cycling but still want to take in the beautiful scenery, there are lots of great drives to do round here.
Newton Circular
You can follow the Newton Circular described in the cycling section or you can take a bit of a longer route and take in Waddinton as well. There are two ways to get to Waddington from Bashall Eaves. Either head towards Clitheroe, turning left onto Twitter Lane at Bashall Barn and follow this through to Waddington, or else turning left in Bashall Eaves and following Rabbit Lane until you hit the Clitheroe-Newton road. I like the latter route best but some of it is single track and you may find yourself having to reverse to let someone else past. If you come via Twitter Lane, you will come past the church to a t-junction, where you turn left. If you come via Rabbit Lane, you turn left at the main road to get to Newton – but you might want to turn right and have a quick look at Waddington first. The road then takes you over Easington Fell and down into Newton. In Newton, you can turn right for a side trip to lovely Slaidburn, or turn left to carry on to Dunsop Bridge. From Dunsop Bridge, you can turn left for a trip through the trough, or carry on the main road to get to Whitewell. In Whitewell, turn left up the steep road over the fell back to Cow Ark. In Cow Ark, turn left and you will soon come back into the village.
Through the Trough
This is a famous and popular drive. First drive to Dunsop Bridge, either via Whitewell (more direct) or via Newton. As you are coming into Dunsop Bridge (from Whitewell) or after the village (from Newton), there is a turning on a sharp bend of the road, signed to Lancaster. As you drive out of the village, you will pass the St Hubert’s Church (see Dunsop Bridge below). This road will take you through the trough and on to Lancaster.
You can link up with the Slaidburn-Bentham route to make a beautiful circular drive. Turn right when you get to Quernmore and then right again at the t-junction. This will take you down to the A683 in Caton. Turn right onto this road and look out for a right-hand turn to Wray and Bentham. Once in Bentham, turn right past the station and you will be on the road back to Slaidburn.
Slaidburn-Bentham
This is less famous but equally beautiful. Drive over to Newton and then turn right towards Slaidburn. In Slaidburn, turn left and head out on the 15 mile fell road that will eventually bring you down into Bentham. You can then return via the trough (see above).
Around Pendle
The drive from Downham round behind Pendle is glorious – drive from Clitheroe to Chatburn and then turn left towards Downham. Once through Downham, continue driving.
